Upper Landsdowne Golf Course - Central Ohio's Hidden Gem

Print E-mail

Upper Landsdowne Golf Course Entering just their third season as owners of Ashville’s Upper Lansdowne Golf Course, Bryan and Tamie Wallake have drastically improved every aspect surrounding the venerable old course. Changes for the better abound at Upper Lansdowne Golf Course and people are noticing.

Since the change in ownership significant improvements have been made that include remodeling of the clubhouse, completion of an irrigation system, addition of extra cart paths and an aesthetic upgrade to the bunkers, which are now filled with white sand.

A few minimal changes are also planned for the routing of the course which will make for a more efficient round, allowing golfers to more rapidly progress from point A to point B and quicken their pace of play.

The clubhouse restaurant, Oasis Café, was also remodeled and now features an expanded menu that includes weekly home cooked specials. Additionally, a breakfast buffet is now served every Saturday morning from 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m.

The Wallake’s vision of turning Upper Lansdowne into a family-friendly golf course has also become a reality. The facility is now home to an awesome junior program unlike any other in the area and a beginner women’s league which includes a weekly lesson from a PGA Professional.

The Junior Golf Program will teach kids every aspect of the game including golf etiquette, proper swing, and short game and even includes a chance to frequently test those skills on the golf course. Other programs available at Upper Lansdowne include a senior’s league, an open Lansdowne League, a Friday night family and couples night and Wednesday sessions with a massage therapist.

All of the noticeable improvements will only serve to enhance the overall beauty of the course that is full of country character, features checkerboard fairways and has the best greens around.

The scenic nature is magnified by the excellent course conditions which are consistently present at Upper Lansdowne.

“You just don’t get that everywhere,” said Tamie Wallake. “It’s very well maintained and people are constantly amazed at the excellent conditions.”

Upper Lansdowne began as a 9-hole layout and was designed by noted Ohio architect Jack Kidwell in 1961. In 1995 Kidwell revisited the course accompanied by Mike Hurdzan and designed another nine holes.

The mix of holes on this rolling countryside layout promises to keep you entertained but there are a few holes that stand out.

Following an extremely short par 4, the fourth hole is the toughest test at Upper Lansdowne. Stretching to 435 yards from the tips, this par-4 is the longest on the course and requires a long uphill drive, then a sharp slope down into a valley and up to the green.

On the backside, it doesn’t get any better than the closing hole. The scene on No. 18 is one you won’t soon forget. Once you turn the corner on this tree-lined dogleg right, your reward is a gorgeous approach to a green guarded by a creek in front, with a line of tall trees and a lake behind it.

The best thing about Upper Lansdowne is the reasonable cost of a round which starts at just $21 for 18 holes and cart for Seniors (Mon-Thur), $24 for the younger crowd and only $32 on the weekend.
