The Landings at Rickenbacker

Literally rebuilt from the ashes of the past
and more than four decades old, The
Landings at Rickenbacker has reinvented
itself into one of the finest golf courses in
the Central Ohio area.

Built in 1959 by an unknown architect,
the cours has undergone a recent renovation
that added strategically placed water hazards
and numerous bunkers, creating a still
playable, yet far more challenging golf course.
In addition, the course recovered from a
November, 2001, fire that destroyed its clubhouse,
to now offer the total golf experience to
area golfers.
All this was accomplished without raising
The Landings at Rickenbacker’s already affordable
rates, creating a course that offers the
“Best Golf Value in Ohio.”

Located just minutes from downtown
Columbus, The Landings at Rickenbacker features
strategically contoured fairways combined
with numerous natural grass areas that
enhance landing areas on every hole. Already
one of the longest courses in the area, the
addition of the bunkering and water hazards
has created a course that demands the use of
every club in the bag.

“The golf course is one of the longest, yet
most playable golf courses in the area,” said
John Huban, PGA professional and director of
golf operations at The Landings at
Rickenbacker. “Low handicappers can play
the championship tees and stretch the yardage
to almost 7,000 yards. Yet the beginner can
enjoy a fun-filled day of golf by playing the
forward tees, which utilizes the widest parts of
the landing areas on each hole.”

During the summer months, the course
plays much firmer and the rough isn’t quite as
thick, allowing for a more aggressive approach off the tee. During spring and fall, however,
the course can really begin to show its teeth.
“I would have to say course management
(is critical) during the spring and fall seasons
due to the rough areas growing so fast because
of weather conditions,” Huban said.

While the course is generally balanced
from the front side to the back, the difference
between a solid round and a rough one often
is decided on a stretch of holes from 12 to 15.
At 147 yards the par-3 12th is perhaps the
easiest par-3 on the course and provides a
good opportunity for birdie.

“Starting with the par-3, a player can set
the tone for either a strong finish or a struggle
to the clubhouse,” Huban said.

Drastically downhill, the 13th also presents
a good birdie opportunity, as most players
will approach the green with a short
wedge. Working its way back up the hill, the
14th plays much longer than it appears and is
a true three-shot par-5. The approach to an
elevated green is critical on this hole.

The stretch of important holes ends with
the short 368-yard par-4 15th, which features
a water hazard extending into the fairway and
a creek that protects the right side of the
green. Wayward shots off the tee or from the
fairway and a large number could follow.

In addition to the layout, The Landings
at Rickenbacker features one of the area’s
finest practice facilities, which includes a
grass driving area, a sand and chipping green
and a putting green. The PARFORMANCE
Golf School is now open on site and features
personalized golf instruction for players of
any level.
